Cape Town Laser Vision

In Cape Town we perform LASIK Laser Vision Operations. LASIK stands for Laser In-situ Keratomileusis, which is used to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, as well as astigmatism. It does this by utilising the laser to reshape the cornea so that light can focus more accurately on the retina in the back of your eye.

When is LASIK Surgery Performed?

Whenever a patient suffers from a refractive error vision can become blurry due to the inability of the eye to correctly focus light on the retina. This refractive error can be caused by numerous medical conditions, all of which can be treated using LASIK Eye Surgery, with the most common being:

Nearsightedness

Also known as myopia, this allows patients to see things clearly when they’re close, but renders things blurry when further away.

Farsightedness

Also known as hyperopia, this allows patients to see things which are faraway more clearly, while items which are closer are blurry.

Astigmatism

An astigmatism can cause a patient's vision to become blurry due to the shape of the eye.

  • Suffer from thin or uneven corneas

  • Suffer from glaucoma

What are the Side Effects of LASIK Eye Surgery?

A number of patients who have undergone LASIK Eye Surgery may experience low levels of discomfort during the first one to two days after the surgery has been performed. Other potential side effects, which are usually temporary in nature, include:

  • Light or glare sensitivity

  • Halos around images

  • Trouble with driving at night

  • Fluctuating vision

  • Dry  and scratchy eyes

  • Slight bruising on the eye

What Happens After LASIK Surgery?

It is important to note that although a patient's eyes will generally heal quickly, this is still a surgical procedure and must be treated as such. Most patients will already notice better vision within days, but if any of the side effects mentioned on this page occur please contact your eye surgeon. Follow-up procedures will be set up when being discharged, with the first checkup being one to two days after the LASIK Laser Vision Surgery has been performed.

Please Note! It is advisable not to swim or completely immerse your face in water for 2 weeks after surgery. In some cases an eye shield might be temporarily recommended to the patient to protect their eyes while sleeping. Due to age related vision deterioration, some patients who have undergone the surgery at a younger age might need additional LASIK Laser Vision Surgery later in life.
